    1. Having dealt with the retrograde condition of interracial relations in the debut novel of this series, author Barbara Neely turns her gimlet eye to the state of relations with the African American community in Blanche and the Talented Tenth. The title refers to W.E.B Dubois prediction that one tenth of the Negro race would rise, through education and good character, to be the leaders who would buoy up the rest of the race The term became conflated with light skinned blacks, those with straight ha [...]

    2. The second book of the Blanche White series has Blanche carefully preparing for a Maine beach holiday in the fictional resort of Amber Cove The talented tenth of the title are the light bright set fair skinned, wealthy, black Americans Blanche, a working class housekeeper, is atypically nervous about her trip Blanche assumed there must be some black black rich women in the country, but she d never seen one so she wasn t expecting to see her eggplant black self mirrored at Amber Cove But color wa [...]

    3. I loved Blanche Among the Talented Tenth even than the first book in the series, Blanche on the Lam I wasn t quite expecting that, because the setting of the first book rural North Carolina is much familiar to me than the setting of the second an expensive black resort on the coast of Maine But in this book we get deeper into Blanche s life and personality The setting allows her to make friends, spend time with the niece and nephew she s raising, and contemplate romance. As with the first book [...]

    4. Barbara Neely has pulled off a rather challenging feat she has managed to introduce the serious issues of color, class and race to readers who would not wittingly pick up a book on those subjects And, she certainly managed to seriously engage me in the subjects The reader who wants a complex and heady mystery story may be disappointed in this novel because that aspect of the book is clearly secondary to Neely s interest in raising the subject of how we judge and perceive each other. This is my se [...]

    5. I was amused, intrigued and educated by Blanche, a housekeeper who tells her story She s a fine strong Southern lady but due to sending her adopted kids to a good school, she finds herself on a snobbish summer holiday resort outside Boston This resort was started by a black man who was not welcome at other resorts, and a good deal of the story is taken up by chatter, memories and thoughts about discrimination and distinctions among the African American resort visitors For the smart, attractive, [...]

    6. Everybody in the country got color on the brain white folks trying to brown themselves up and looking down on everything that ain t white at the same time black folks puttin each other down for being too black brown folks trying to make sure nobody mistakes them for black yellow folks trying to convince themselves they re white Timely Why yes So isn t it interesting that this book was initially published in 1994 My many thanks go to Net Galley and Brash Books for a fascinating DRC.The Blanche Wh [...]

    7. I thought in skipping the first Blance mystery Blanche on the Lam I would miss out on getting to know the main character, but that was not the case Blanche turned out to be interesting than the mystery itself which I thought was a little lackluster The central theme here is the mistreatment i.e looking down on of dark skinned black people by thier light skinned counterparts, which Blanche, being dark, experienced all of her life The mystery read like gossip and only seemed to create the settin [...]

    8. Blanche is a richly and wonderfully complex and yet simple character Yes, this book was another page turner and I was TOTALLY shocked at the end But I have to admit that I enjoyed reading about the struggles of color struck Black folks than I did the murder story I connected with a lot of it having been on the receiving end of color prejudice growing up, and even now only four years ago dealing with the cruel comments from people when I decided to go all natural with my hair.Such a deep rich st [...]

    9. This is nominally a mystery, I guess, but is mostly a character study of the protagonist, Blanche White, who makes her living cleaning houses The narrative really focuses on her thoughts and attitudes about race relations as she lives through a few days away from home in an unfamiliar environment The entire story unfolds at a rather old exclusive resort with cottages originally created and now owned by upper crust black families who ve held them for a couple of generations or so There are two de [...]

    10. This is the second in a series, and the second in ebook format, and once again our protagonist finds herself distinctly different from those around her Blanche is an African American domestic worker whose children attend a private school and have made connections to spend vacation time at an exclusive upperclass African American retreat in Maine, including Blanche for a 2 week visit Once there Blanche is exposed to prejudice and elitism from within the African American community How she handles [...]

    11. I found the characters interesting than in the first book of the series but the plot dragged and the social commentary, for me, takes away from my enjoyment I had that reaction to the first book in the series as well.

    12. A Great Read ,This book was thoroughly entertaining, characters were well rounded and likeable Great storyline I can t say enough of how much I enjoyed this book Looking forward to reading of Barbra Neely

    14. Read the full review at Tales Between the PagesI haven t ever read Barbara Neely or the first book in the Blanche White series, but I am very glad that I read this book The story can stand alone Neely does a nice job providing enough back story for those of use who haven t read about Blanche White before.Blanche is a funny, dynamic, strong, black woman and I enjoyed reading about her very much It s very nice to read about a female character who knows exactly who she is and isn t apologetic about [...]

    15. To be published Feb 2, 2015This is a racist book Colorstruck as the author would say Only it s about degrees of color, myriad complexions of darkness and light within America s African American people, dividing the Haves from the Have Nots Exactly what shade of brown or black or high yellow do you have to be, to be accepted among one race of people, divided by hue The Talented Tenth referred to in the title is a reference to W.E.B Dubois who said that, The Talented Tenth of the Negro race must b [...]

    16. Blanche has plans to enjoy some time off in a posh resort island and spend time with her kids It isn t all lazy and luxurious time She has noticed that her kids are developing an attitude from being students in an upscale private school She hopes spending time with them and observing them among their peers will give her some clues why the changes and a chance to stop these changes She doesn t bargain for a murder to be part of the package. It isn t just the kids that have the attitudes, it is als [...]

    17. Blanche White living and learning This is the second book about Blanche White I ve read and I liked this one better than the first Since I m not black, I can t say how much of a look into the life of a black woman this gives All I can say is that it feels very real and honest Add to that there is a mystery too Just really liking this character and the books about her.

    18. i enjoyed this 2nd book in the blanche white series so much barbara neely has done some really interesting and impressive things with these books they cross genres, create tension, provide moments of levity, and address important social and racial issues and all in under 300 pages blanche is a terrific protagonist and through newly s writing and character development i can t help but cheer for blanche she s the kind of woman we should all be so lucky enough to have as a best friend s a nice piec [...]

    19. This story plays out like a soap opera There are couples mixed of dark and light or black and white Among them, there s a gossip queen who ends up electrocuted in her bathtub Mattie refuses to believe that the clues pointing to her godson as a killer are true Blanche and Mattie find the box containing all the dirt Faith the gossip hermit had on people. There ends up being four mysterious deaths for Blanche to solve and I couldn t figure out any of them until she did There was enough to second gue [...]

    20. In Blanche Among the Talented Tenth, Blanche has moved to Boston from North Carolina School friends have invited her kids to spend the summer at a coastal resort in Maine Blanche joins them there for a couple of weeks, freeing the hosts to take a short couples vacation The resort is a popular location for the rich and elite in the African American community At the core are the Insiders whose families founded the resort and who own their cabins on the property Outsiders are transient visitors who [...]

    21. Refreshingly down to earth writing with no sugar coating about the life of a black woman and her associations with others both black and white This story reminds me of life growing up in the south amongst black and white folks There did not seem to be the racial attitudes prevalent in the today s world People simply tolerated and got along doing what was necessary to get by Granted there was separation between colors as there was separation between classes no matter the color I believe the work [...]

    22. Disclaimer I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.Blanche Among the Talented Tenth is the second book in the Blanhche White mystery series Blanche is once again having the role of accidental detective When she takes Taifa and Malik to Amber Cove, and exclusively African American Resort, she has to put up with all kinds of drama The drama is full of class and race attitudes As if this was a lot to deal with, someone commits suicide and another guest electrocutes her [...]

    23. Blanche thinks she is getting away from detective work As she is going on a vacation going to Amber Cove, a seaside resort in Maine However, a guest, Insider gossip Faith Brown is found dead Her husband flees and leaves a note saying he killed her Blanche looks into it and discovers Faith had a lot of enemies Who killed Faith In this mystery, segregation is part of the novel The author manages to do this quite skillfully You are exposed to segregation among the African American community light s [...]

    24. At Popcorn Reads, one of our criteria for reviewing novels is that they fall within a certain publication date window however, we re making a huge exception today to bring you a novel by multi award winning author and activist Barbara Neely Blanche Among the Talented Tenth is an amateur detective mystery and Book 2 of Ms Neely s Blanche White mystery series however, it reads quite well as a stand alone novel It also addresses a common skeleton in the closet phenomenon among all marginalized grou [...]

    25. I thought this book was better than the first one It was easy for me to absorb the story plot and the mystery was an incredible read This time finds Blanche White going through a personal crisis and trying to find answers as to how to proceed with her life Her children are growing up and she has to acknowledge that being a parent is never easy Along the way she tries to find answers for herself while vacationing in a place she never thought she would ever visit, Amber Cove She makes the acquaint [...]

    26. More satisfying as a novel than a mystery, this book gives a fascinating and often disheartening look at how internalized racism and class prejudice plays out within the African American community I absolutely love Blanche, a proudly plus size, pagan, feminist, working class woman with Miss Marple s gift for intuiting the truth about people She s the compassionate, truth telling friend every woman needs. At first I didn t find it believable that the characters would investigate or tamper with evi [...]

    27. Blanche White is a woman with a rich black skin has suffered many insults because of her color Her normal is very domestic work She is responsible for her dead sister s children who have been invited to friend the summer at Amber Cove, an exclusive resort for blacks She will watch the children while the parents go on a vacation Most of residents are light skin blacks and sees varying degrees of perceive reactions to the colr of skin There are twists and turns until the end which is a surprise I [...]
